The menopause strictly speaking is when you stop having periods. However the term is used commonly for the period leading up to the cessation of periods when women experience 'menopausal' symptoms the commonest being hot flushes and night sweats. Even though you are having periods the amount of oestrogen produced in this 'menopausal' phase is falling and thus the symptoms.
Although the average age is 51 some women can have it prematurely (defined as before 35) or much later. Management of the erratic bleeding around the menopausal period can inconvenient but thankfully can be managed with simple modern treatments.
Many symptoms have been associated with the menopause some without clear evidence. Management of the menopause is not simply about HRT and various lifestyle changes and alternative treatments can help.
For those with severe symptoms HRT is still a very effective treatment under supervision. Women no longer need to accept the symptoms as inevitable.
